For about a week in mid August, Rome is home to the Africa Festival. This wide festival (which, for that matter, occasions events to be held in the surrounding localities of Rome, Civitavecchia included) is an ideal opportunity to become acquainted with essential aspects of the African culture. By means of the established programs which, as a rule, consist of theater performances, music and dance shows, debates and discussions, film and documentary screenings, the public has the chance to gain a thorough insight into the depths of the culture of the black continent, being provided, at the same time, with an understanding of the diachronic development of this culture (or, better yet, sum of regional and local traditions which, put together, generate the specificity of a unique continental culture), culminating in the presentation of the contemporary African culture.

A special emphasis is also laid on the importance of Africa (culturally, politically, socially, environmentally, economically speaking) in the wider context of its relations with the rest of the world.
